| What is the most efficient setback for
my programmable thermostat? |
| It depends. To maximize energy savings with programmable
thermostats, the magic downtime period seems to be eight hours.
For heating, an eight-hour setback of about 15 degrees provides roughly
a 10 percent annual savings compared to leaving the heat at 68 F all
winter. For cooling, the DOE suggests turning the temperature up
to 78 F for sleeping. However, these rules change for heat pumps and
alternative systems such as geothermal. Fortunately, many of the latest
programmable thermostats have smart settings for these alternative
systems. |
| How often do I need to tune & clean my
furnace? |
Echols and the equipment manufacturers
recommend yearly checks on your equipment (at a minimum, every 2 years).
All equipment needs checked for safety and cleaned routinely.
|
| My throat and nose get very dry at night
- is there anything I can do? |
Installing a whole house humidifier is the best way to
prevent this problem. It will also eliminate static in the house and
make the home more comfortable for you.
|
| How often should I change my filters in
the furnace? |
If you have a standard disposable filter, you should change
them monthly. If you have an electronic filter, they must be cleaned
monthly for maximum efficiency. If you have an enhanced filter media air
cleaner (such as an Aprilaire Spacegard), the manufacturer recommends yearly
changes unless you have unusual circumstances in your home.
|
| Why should I buy a high efficiency
furnace? |
Cost of operation will be cheaper than a low efficiency furnace.
This is a return on your investment. There are many options available
with the newer furnaces that not only make operation less expensive, but
allow you much greater comfort in your home.
|
| What is Carbon Monoxide (CO)?
|
CO is produced by the incomplete combustion of fuels- it is
odorless, colorless but toxic - all burning applicances have the
potential to produce carbon monodide -Carbon monoxide can result from improperly vented or
malfunctioning combustion applicances such as furnaces, stoves and water
heaters. We recommend using a carbon monoxide detector in your home.
|
| Why should I have a night
set back (Programable) thermostat? |
| The government estimates you can save as much as 10 percent a
year on your heating and cooling bills by simply turning the thermostat
back 10 to 15 percent for 8 hours during a 24-hour period. That
means that during the heating season, if you turn the heat down when you
go to bed at night or leave for work, you save 10 percent.
